Tackling grid congestion: what can be done today?

The Brabant energy ecosystem came together at the Brabant Development Agency (BOM) to look at feasible solutions for grid congestion. Antoine Post of Integer showed what smart control (AI / MPC) can contribute.

With a large and diverse group of participants, from entrepreneurs and grid operators to municipalities and knowledge institutions, the session covered the challenges of grid congestion, but above all the solutions. The focus was on what can be done, and what is feasible right now.

Three solutions that already work

Alongside Integer Technologies, Energieopslag Spinder and GOase Suncharging showed what they are already doing today to counter grid congestion. Daan van Lange presented his position paper, which puts a flexible, decentralised energy system at the centre. The recipe: dare, do and collaborate. A great deal is already possible.

Buildings that anticipate

Antoine Post's presentation drew on results from the Energy Link project (OPZuid). By letting buildings anticipate occupancy, weather and grid load, room is created on the electricity grid, without extra batteries or major changes to the installation. Two buildings with smart control showed in practice how power stays below a limit while comfort is maintained.

The Energy Link project is carried out by a consortium of Integer (lead partner), CSB Installatietechniek, Adviesbureau DWA, BIVAK Onderwijs, Avans University of Applied Sciences and Eindhoven University of Technology, with the support of the BOM, Vattenfall, Alliander and TheFuture BV. It is co-financed by the European Union (OPZuid, European Regional Development Fund). Together we are working on a concrete and scalable answer to grid congestion, so that companies can keep decarbonising and growing. More about the project and its goals is on energylink.news.

Thanks to the BOM

Our thanks to the Brabant Development Agency for organising a very valuable and well-run event. On to new collaborations and concrete steps towards a smarter, more flexible energy system.
